Author: Valerijus Rudzinskas
When a person begins to hear a voice that no longer belongs to them, not only a psychological crisis begins, but also a spiritual drama.
The book “When Demons Speak” explores the phenomenon of demonic voices from the Scriptures and the Church Fathers to modern psychology and neuropsychiatry. Here, the possessed of the Gospels, desert ascetics, mystics, and the modern person living in a noise-filled world meet.
The demonic voice is described not only as an object of religion or psychiatry but also as a universal shadow of human consciousness – a sign of a broken dialogue with God, with others, and with oneself.
The author, drawing on mystics and thinkers from various epochs, reveals that the voice of evil often speaks in our own language. It does not always shout; sometimes it whispers. It does not always threaten; sometimes it flatters. But it always aims for one thing – to dominate the listening.
In the book, the demonic voice is portrayed as a distorted echo of the word, as a parody of creative power, as a split of consciousness. However, it is also an invitation to learn to discern who is speaking and to dare to remain in the silence where true dialogue is born.
This is a book about voice and silence, about temptation and freedom, about the boundary between mysticism and psychosis.
